â€Å"Ball and Unchained† How much would you sacrifice to have the ability to make your own decisions? What would you do to be truly free; from debt, poverty, sadness, addiction, or from anything that causes you misery, pain or unhappiness? Would you risk insanity or even your life? Both â€Å"The Yellow Wallpaper† by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and â€Å"The Story of an Hour† by Kate Chopin are two short stories that can today be categorized as feminist works of fiction. The main characters are females who are struggling for freedom from their husbands. Although the characters situations differ and the women react differently once they are aware of their suppression, the authors use similar motifs, imagery and themes. Both Gilman and Chopin use irony†¦show more content†¦The narrator believes that congenial work would do her good (326) and that writing is a relief for her troubled mind, but John forbids both. Instead he confines his wife to a room with barred windows and hideous yellow wa llpaper, does not allow her to exert herself physically or mentally, and prevents her from seeing her friends and family. While â€Å"The Story of an Hour† is arguably less detailed, there is no doubt that the main character, Louise Mallard, is also oppressed by her husband. Instead of feeling melancholy about the loss of her husband, Louise exalts in the freedom that Brently’s death has now given her, realizing that the years to come â€Å"would belong to her absolutely† (317). Her oppression has ended and she now has the liberty to do what she pleases. Instead of dreading living a long and repressed life with her husband, she is happy with the realization that her life will be long and full of independence. It is not that Louise’s husband is willingly choosing to deny power to his wife, but more so that marriage is inherently oppressive. Norman Mcleans A River Runs Through It Explores Many Feelings And Exp

Norman Mclean's A River Runs Through It explores many feelings and experiences of one ?turn of the century? family in Missoula, Montana. In both the movie, directed by Robert Redford, and the original work of fiction we follow the Mcleans through their joys and sorrows. However, the names of the characters and places are not purely coincidental. These are the same people and places known by Norman Mclean as he was growing up. In a sense, A River Runs Through It is Mclean's autobiography. Although these autobiographical influences are quite evident throughout the course of the story they have deeper roots in the later life of the author as he copes with his life's hardships. The characters in the movie and book are taken straight from Mclean's life. From the hard working, soft centered, minister father, to the drunken, ?down on his luck?, brother-in-law, Neil. The character of Paul appears the be the most true to life member of Norman's family. The audience quickly becomes familia r with Paul and his quick-tempered, always ready for anything attitude. This is evident in the beginning of the story with Paul's frequent phrase ?...with a bet on the to make things interesting (Mclean 6).? ?It was almost funny and sometimes not so funny to see a boy always wanting to bet on himself and almost sure to win (Mclean 5).? Unlike Norman who was rigorously home schooled every morning, while Paul seemed to escape this torment. The boys would spend their afternoons frolicking in the woods and fishing the Big Blackfoot River. The differences that developed between Paul's and Norman's fishing styles become evident in the published versions of Mclean's life as well as his real life. Norman followed the traditional style taught by their preacher-father, ten and two in a four -count rhythm, like a metronome. The four-count rhythm, of course, is functional. The one count takes the line, leader, and fly off the water; the two count tosses them seemingly straight into the sky; th e three count was my father's way of saying that at the top the leader and fly have to be given a little beat of time to get behind the line as it is starting forward; the four count means put on the power and throw the line into the rod until you reach ten o'clock-then check-cast, let the fly and leader get ahead of the line, and coast to a soft and perfect landing (Mclean 4). Paul, on the other hand, was less controlled by their father. Therefore he was able to develop his own style of casting. This new technique in which he dubbed ?shadow casting? was able to draw the fish to the surface using only the shadow of the fly. ?...That the fish are alerted by the shadows of flies passing over the water by the first casts, so hit the fly the moment it touches the water (Mclean 21).? Among other things, Paul was also grew up with a bit of gambling and drinking streak in him. Paul's habits did not just exist in the book, these characteristics of Paul were carried over from Norman's re al life experiences with his brother. ?...Paul lived mostly by instinct and bravado, learning early on to gamble, drink and fight (Eastman 54).? Paul's tendancies of to get into the high stakes poker games without a clear head and then try to fight his way out of debt was what eventually leads to his demise; both in real life and in A River Runs Through it. Although the documentation of Norman Mclean's life is very similar to his real life, there are some subtle differences that exist. In the wide screen version of A River Runs Through It, directed by Robert Redford, the middle part of the movie is taken up with Norman's courting of Jessie, his real life wife. This is different from the book because as the book progresses, Norman is already married to Jessie. One other difference between the movie and the author's real life is a small scene in which the Mclean boys ?borrow? a rowboat and run the rapids of a nearby river. Programs like the Educational Opportunity Program are designed to provide the necessary support to disadvantaged students to enable their success in college and beyond. In this article, I’ll describe EOP, detail the advantages of participating in an Educational Opportunity Program, and let you know how to enroll. What Is EOP? The Educational Opportunity Program, or EOP, is a counseling and academic support program designed to helplow-income and first generation college students succeed in college. A student is first generation if neither parent went to college. EOPs are state programs, and they're typically only for in-state residents of public colleges. The purpose of these programsis to help students who face additional obstacles in higher education succeed academically and graduate.There are EOPs in a number of states, but it's not available in every state or at every college.Look at a school’s website or contact its admissions office to see if it has an EOP. EOP is available at California State University and University of California campuses.While each CSU campus has an EOP, the only UC schools that have an EOP are UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, and UC Santa Cruz. However, there are comparable programs at the other UC schools. Additionally, there are EOPs in New York at State University of New York (SUNY) schools and in New Jersey at schools like New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rider University, and Seton Hall University. There are similar programs at state colleges in New Jersey through the Educational Opportunity Fund (EOF). I also found EOPs at Oregon State and University of Washington. Most campuses that offer EOP provide a summer program for EOP students to help them transition to college and prepare for college life. Thestudents get to live on campus and strengthen their academic skills before college starts. During the academic year, EOP offers counseling, mentorship, and academic advising for enrolledstudents to help them succeed academically. Furthermore, EOP offers students career advice and preparation for graduate studies.Also, some programs provide financial assistance, including offering grants and waiving or deferring certain fees. Eligibility does vary by campus, butit's typicallybased on income requirements, meaning that yourfamily's income must be below a certain amount for you to qualify for the program. Each state's income threshold is slightly different. As an example, at CSUs, the maximum income for a family of four is $46,400. At CSUs, you must meet EOP income criteria to be eligible for EOP.If your family income exceeds the guidelines, you may still be considered for EOP if your demonstrated Expected Family Contribution is less than $1,500. Check this page for the income requirements for SUNY schools.At SUNY schools, EOP is also designed for students who don’t meet the normal admission requirements but show academic promise. Here are the income requirements in New Jersey. For most EOPs, only in-state residents and US citizens or permanent residents are eligible for EOP. In California, undocumented immigrants who qualify for in-state tuition through AB540 are also eligible for all California EOPs. Generally, EOP eligibility guidelines are less strict at UC campuses.At UC Berkeley, any low-income,first generation, or historically underrepresented students (African-American, Chicano/Latino, and Native-American) are eligible for EOP.At UCSB, EOP services all students but focuses on low-income and first generation undergraduates. Why Should You Join EOP? If you apply to a school that has an EOP and you’re eligible, I highly recommend trying to join the program.Not only can you receive financial benefits but also the transitional summer program and advising can help you be successful in college and beyond. Many EOP students come from under-resourced schools and don’t enter college as prepared as their more affluent peers.Furthermore, because thesestudents may not have parents or family members who are knowledgeable about college, they’re not able to get the same guidance as other students, unless they participate in programs like EOP. Also, low-income, first generation college students can feel isolated on college campuses and have a hard time relating to their fellow students who come from more privileged backgrounds.EOP can help you find a community of students with backgrounds similar to yours, and you can receive counseling and mentorship to help you deal with the struggles that come from being a low-income, first generation college student. Many of the students I worked with joined EOP. Generally, they were grateful for the program, and I believe all of the students I know who were in EOP ended up graduating from college. For SUNY schools, submit the regular application and indicate your interest in EOP. You may be asked to fill out additional forms and provide documentation. What If a School Doesn’t Have EOP or You’re Not Eligible?
